Prolon Cycle 13: Trying out the new (Gen3) soup flavors
Prolon Day 1 box contents
Prolon is now offering two soup flavor options to choose from, so for my 13th cycle I decided to try out the newest flavors.
Read here for a full description of my experience doing 12 cycles of Prolon, including Prolon benefits, advice, and tips. In this post, I will talk more specifically about the box contents and a comparison of the two meal program options currently being offered.
Meal Plan Overview
Each day of the fast starts with an L-Bar for breakfast, followed with a soup for lunch and a soup for dinner. The additional snacks vary depending on the day, with kale crackers, olives, and choco crisp as the potential options. Both the kale crackers and choco crisp are so delicious that I would eat them even when not on the diet (unfortunately neither is currently available for sale individually). I hate olives but usually eat the olives offered during the fast (my friend and I always say that they are the best olives that you will ever have, even if you don’t like olives; amazing what a little hunger will do!). The L-Bars are enjoyable enough while on the fast, but probably not what I would choose outside of the diet as they are a bit bland. I personally prefer Prolon’s fasting bars (available to purchase individually) to the L-Bars, in particular the Chocolate chip flavor, and the new expanded variety pack offers them as an alternative to the L-Bar.
The original flavors are:
Minestrone
Tomato
Mushroom
Vegetable
Minestrone and Quinoa
The Gen2 flavors (not currently being sold) are:
Butternut Squash
Tomato
Butternut Squash and Quinoa
White Bean and Spinach
The new (Gen3) flavors are:
Red Bell Pepper and Onion
Green Pea & Chives
Lentil Curry
Chickpea & Leeks
Carrot Ginger
Soup Preparation
All of the soups in the Gen3 plan can be made in the microwave or even just by adding hot water which is great for people on the go. The Gen1 and Gen2 soups that have quinoa do take about 15 minutes on the stovetop, but they also feel like heartier soups and are a bit more satisfying, so it’s a worthy trade off for the added prep time.
The Original (Gen 1) Flavors
I would say the the Gen 1 flavors are mostly inoffensive. They border on the bland side (some people do add spices, which is technically allowed but I’m a purist I like to stick only to what is exactly in the box) but are safe. The only exception is the mushroom, which if you don’t like mushrooms, will be very hard to get down. Luckily, I love mushrooms. The other flavors are honestly interchangeable and you probably won’t be more or less to excited to eat one vs the other.
The Gen 2 Flavors
You currently can’t buy this option so I won’t say too much about it. I have tried the butternut squash soup since Prolon once sent it to me as an “alternative soup” to use with my fast. It was honestly a bit chalky so you aren’t missing out on too much. The tomato soup is the same as you get in the Gen 1 box and I don’t believe I’ve ever tried the white bean and spinach. Perhaps this was discontinued because it wasn’t very popular.
The New (Gen 3) Flavors
These flavors are definitely a lot more interesting. Given this was my 13th cycle, it was exciting to have new flavors to try out and not know what to expect. The carrot ginger soup taste doesn’t taste very much like carrot but does have a faint ginger flavor which is quite nice, if you like ginger. A bit bland, but there’s nothing offensive about this soup. The red bell pepper and onion soup had a small kick to it, making it perhaps the most flavorful of all the soups. The lentil curry also rated high on the flavor scale, and the lentils make it feel a bit heartier than the red bell pepper and onion. The chickpea and leeks and green pea and chives soups were honestly not that memorable and reminded me more of the Gen 1 flavors than the others.
Overall Thoughts
I really enjoyed the Gen 3 soup flavors and will probably order this box going forward. The only nice thing about the Gen 1 flavors is that the soups with quinoa seem a bit heartier and more filling. If I could design my perfect box, I would do the carrot ginger, red bell pepper and onion soup, lentil curry, the minestrone and quinoa, and maybe the mushroom since it has a very different flavor than anything else.
