the Hulken bag: a chic way to haul
The Hulken bag makes it so much easier to transport items around while looking chic to boot.
I live in New York City, which means that I do a lot of walking and I don’t have a car. A lot of people have those foldable shopping carts (a “granny” cart) but I just couldn’t bring myself to get one. I had seen instagram ads for the Hulken bag, but it seemed a bit pricey and I wasn’t sure it would really be that functional. It seemed too chic to be.
Then I saw one in the wild. And another. I saw women effortlessly pulling their Hulken behind them as they walked on the sidewalk. I had a bit of envy and decided to bite the bullet and buy a Hulken. While it also comes in a lot of chic colors, I decided on the classic black so as it seemed the most “classic” and would match any outfit.
There is a cover that can be zipped up which is great if you get caught in the rain (happens a lot in NYC).
The medium is 16x12x20 inches and I would say that’s the correct size for the bag. The larger one is 20x16x24 but both have the same weight capacity of 66 pounds.
It can be a bit hard to control and when NYC sidewalks get crowded I need to instead pull it using the two side handles so that it is next to me rather than behind me, but they are a bit short to do that comfortably.
Use cases:
Grocery Shopping - I’m able to buy heavier items like canned drinks without an issue. My Hulken is particularly helpful for my Trader Joes runs, since there is no delivery option for TJ’s.
Dropping off packages - I tend to buy and return a lot and sometimes items are heavy or awkward to carry because of their size, so I throw them into my Hulken to take to UPS/FedEx.
Grilling on the roof - My building has a rooftop grill but I need to bring up grilling tools, ingredients, drinks, cups, plates, etc etc so I just throw everything in my Hulken.
Overall, I am happy with my purchase and certainly glad that I have one. I like how I can swing it over my shoulder with the two handles on the sides when it is light/empty and pull it using the handle on the front.
The options are endless. If you are wondering if the splurge is worth it, if you are someone that cares about aesthetics, it definitely is!
