lugless - a smart travel hack
Lugless is a great (and inexpensive) hack that has saved me valuable time at the baggage carousel and enabled me to lighten my load whilte on the road.
To quote George Clooney’s character Ryan Bingham from Up in the Air:
“35 minutes a flight. I travel 270 days a year. That's 157 hours. That makes seven days. You're willing to throw away an entire week on that?”
And in addition to time, when checking a bag you have to worry about it getting lost or damaged.
The first time I used lugless was when I had a multi-leg trip starting with a wedding in Chicago and ending with a business trip in Europe. Given how much I travel, checking a bag can cost me a considerable amount of time over the course of the year. But it was going to be hard to fit a bridesmaid dress and shoes into my carry on along with two weeks of business appropriate attire in the winter. So I traveled with my carry on luggage and a duffle which I had to check on the first flight to Chicago, but then used lugless to send back to New York while continued on my journey with just my carry on in tow.
With lugless, you pay according to the size of your luggage (carry on, checked-in, oversize), your preferred carrier (UPS or Fedex), and a variety of options.
The above image is a sample quote of a FedEx shipment of a carry on bag from New York to Los Angeles that has a base price of $37. I usually opt for the minimal package with no adds-ons, so for $37 I could ship my carry on across the country. Depending how much you have to pay to check bags, lugless could also save you money. The best part is that you don’t need any sort of box or packaging to ship your luggage. I was a bit worrying about shipping my Longchamp duffle bag, but it made it home with barely a scratch on it.
Using lugless on an outbound flight does require some planning as you’ll need to drop it off a few days before you depart for your trip, but it is perfect for return flights where you might not immediately need your belongings. This is great for when I do a lot of shopping on a trip and don’t want to check a bag on the way back. I just keep a longchamp duffle in bag folded up in my carry on if I plan to shop, and fill it up with things to send home.
For those who are less concerned about price and just want the convenience of traveling without bags, with the “extra” package bags will be picked up and dropped off at your door.
